A Girl Named Rosita: The Story of Rita Moreno: Actor, Singer, Dancer, Trailblazer! by Anika Aldamuy Denise

5.0

I was so excited to read this book! Ever since I was exposed to West Side Story in high school, I've loved Rita Moreno's Anita, and I've taught West Side Story to my own high school students at every opportunity. My students are English Language Learners, and the majority are Latinos themselves, so I was searching for a book that would make a great tie-in with my West Side Story unit. This book tells the story of Rosita (Rita) leaving Puerto Rico for America, dealing with racism, overcoming obstacles to reach her dreams, and eventually, landing the role of Anita. The illustrations are GORGEOUS, and I am so excited to read this to my students the next time I teach West Side Story. As a Boriqua, I love the representation! :D
