The Conference of the Birds by Ransom Riggs

2.0

I'm disappointed. From the start I knew I was only reading out of loyalty to the series (I'm a completist - if I start a series and read the second book I'm compelled to read the rest regardless of enjoyment). When book four was announced I was excited to get back to the characters but I don't remember thinking much of it. In fact when starting this I realised I'd forgotten the plot of book four and had to Google it.

This also won't stick in my memory

The plot was barely a plot and the photos, which once bought excitement, now felt shoehorned - almost as if additional characters were placed as he'd already decided to use them but didn't have a reason to

The two stars is purely down to the return of Fiona. Her disappearance devastated me in the original trilogy and her lack of resolution bothered me with each subsequent book. She deserved more than her return in Conference. Hugh deserved more than to be suddenly reduced to a love sick puppy. As pleased as I am to have her back in the fold, the way it happened did not please me

Noor also seems to be a character of great potential. Her peculiarity is refreshing. Her becoming little more than the other woman in the Emma/Jacob triangle is lazy. The way Emma responds seems vastly out of character

I hope for more from book six of the "trilogy" then pray the series ends. Perhaps there is room for a prequel about Abe but continuing to follow Jacob would be unwise at best
