Being Lolita: A Memoir by Alisson Wood
Did not finish book. Stopped at 42%.
The author tried to compare herself to Lolita without any real reason for the comparison. She was far older than the character in the book, and she doesn't even have sex with the teacher until after she turns 18. While yes, the teacher was a manipulative person and groomed her, it was not on the same level as Humbert Humbert and I found it offesive that she tried to make her situation into the same thing. Yes, the teacher liked the book, since all male predator teachers love that book. But she was actually an adult when they began their sexual relationship. It doesn't justify what he did to her, but it does make me question why the book is tittled the way it is.
The constant references to Alice in Wonderland were grating and I began to dread coming across another one. It soon became apparent that their relationship consisted of nothing more than nicknames and fighting, and that was about the point that I gave up on the book. I hope the author has healed from this experience, because I completely believe that she went through a traumatic experience with this man, and he genuinely sounds like a predator who takes advantage of his students, but unfortunately I didn't enjoy reading the book.
