This book is definitely plot heavy. It relies on the twists and turns to drive the storyline forward. I loved the setting and the descriptions, and I think Jacks was easily my favorite character. We love a mysterious bad boy. But Evangeline was a little amateur & easily persuaded by the rest of the cast. She didn’t have a strong character or personality which made it hard for me really like her.
Luckily, I did enjoy the rest of the story. Stephanie Garber has a really creative mind! The North could be a character in itself and watching Evangeline run around and meet people totally made the book worth it.
I feel like I had high hopes for this book because I loved Caraval so much, but this book seems a little juvenile compared to that one. The plot is a little messier, a little less thought out, and not as creative. But I can see the potential for the rest of the series so I’m excited to continue it.
