Albert Woodfox spent forty years in solitary confinement at Angola Prison in Louisiana. This is his story of endurance, perseverance and hope. It shines a light on the cruel and unusual punishment inmates' experience while in custody, the corrupt judicial system and the dangers of prison (i.e. sexual exploitation, assault, violence, etc.).
Woodfox was sentenced to Angola for robbery, and when his political beliefs aligned with that of the Black Panther Party, he was framed and convicted for the murder of a correctional officer. Despite the lack of evidence tied to him, the system was rigged. He tirelessly fought for justice and his sanity.
It's an interesting read. Heartbreaking. It is said that life is short. To spend forty years behind bars, in solitary confinement, for a crime you did not commit. It blows my mind; this is time that he can't get back! And there are no repercussions for the parties involved in holding him captive. Definitely makes one wonder how many others are unjustly convicted and serving time. We don't need to be building additional prisons; it's just legalized slavery.
