The Wolf in Winter by John Connolly
5.0
On second read I think this may be my favorite Charlie Parker book. The person or persons of interest in this book is in fact a town. A town called Prosperous, where the inhabitants worship a god called The Green Man. Prosperous is unlike any other town in Maine in that it is in fact prosperous even when the rest of the country is not, it is also lucky in that the people who live there generally live a good long life. In order to maintain this Prosperous must sacrifice a young female adult to their god. Enter Charlie....... it comes to his attention that a dead homeless man who apparently committed suicide was scraping together funds to have Charlie look into the disappearance of his daughter. Charlie thinks that maybe he was helped along in his suicide.
Charlie being the man he is sets out to look into her disappearance. When the town realize that Charlie isn’t one who is easily put off they make the biggest possible mistake.
In this book Connolly does a terrific job of grossing you out with his description of one of his character’s who has been suffering from leprosy. I will not enter any quotes of his description as I did on the last book, lets just say its not pretty. It also give insight into life as a homeless person and how hard surviving this life is, maybe a little empathy and a good deal of more help from society would make all the difference. I would say that the community that takes care of the homeless deserve a medal.
A sweet moment is when we finally see Ronald Straydeer get a new dog.
A lot has been left out of this review mainly because why would I spoil it. Let’s just say if you read it you’ll be blown away.
