The Complete Short Stories of James Purdy by James Purdy

5.0

I'd only read MALCOLM before and liked but didn't love. I should probably go back and read it again having read this. Purdy's undeniably a genius. What amazes me is that all these stories of varying length, tone and theme all came from the same mind. Some might have surface similarities but no two are very much alike. With many collections--especially one of this size-- you start getting a pattern of how the writers mind works, where it's going to go. Not here! And that's tremendously exciting as a reader. Also, with a collection this big, some material stories resonated with me than others did but all in all the fact that all these various and sundry works came from one artist?--I'm blown away.
