Miss 'Harry Mills' (Princess Maud of Wales) and James Marlowe on the outfitted British Navy airship Kestrel go west, on a expedition as "part tourists, part spies, and part archeologists" for new Aetherian-adapted technology.

When Harry picks up a pennydreadful titled ‘The True Story of the Haunted Locomotive of the Rockies.’ they head to Alamosa and it's 'haunted' train, finding instead more mysteries surrounding the Aetherian technology and beings, as the train is murderous and seemingly intelligent as well.
