Oh, Anne. As someone who grew up in Nova Scotia (*cough* the province where Anne was born) and spent many summers of her childhood on Prince Edward Island, you know I love Anne. I've been to the Green Gables house, I've posed in the carriages and ran between the trees of the Haunted Wood. I grew up watching the TV specials and the cartoon - needless to say, my love knows no bounds.
It's impossible not to love that sweet orphan who just longed for a home and had a penchant for getting into sticky situations. Diana is the best bosom friend and Gilbert Blythe the most perfect not-really-foe. Matthew, and even Marilla when she finally comes around, are some of the kindest souls.
The book is beautifully written and it's so easy to picture PEI with its red roads and blue ocean. Anne's world is brought to life through her rambunctious, vivid imagination - each plant, tree and lane comes to life and appearances clearly on the page.
I honestly can't recommend this book enough. I think this is my third reading of it over the years and each time it fills me with a warm excitement to know that I'm returning to Green Gables and Avonlea.
