Maurice by E.M. Forster

5.0

After finishing part one I already knew this was going to be a 5/5 stars review. I instantly fell in love with the way it was written and how every word seemed to fit perfectly. Every sentence was carefully picked and can be read poetically.

In the beginning, I sympathized more with Clive than with Maurice because I disliked the way Maurice thought about women (in his family) and how he thought about people below his social class.
Throughout the story, you could notice character development as he experienced his journey of self-acceptance.
For Clive, I felt sorry because there was so much internalized homophobia involved which held him back from accepting who he really was (he was probably just bi?).

Forster wrote this when homosexuality was illegal in England and with that, "he could give Maurice the life and ending that was never given to himself."

“A happy ending was imperative. I shouldn’t have bothered to write otherwise. I was determined that in fiction anyway two men should fall in love and remain in it for the ever that fiction allows, and in this sense, Maurice and ___ still roam the greenwood.” -Forster
