Complex, intriguing, and rife with betrayal and morally ambiguous characters (my absolute favorite kind); I was utterly enrapt from start to finish and never knew quite what to expect, let alone who to trust.
A Game of Thrones is the first true-blue high fantasy novel I've read and I'm forever grateful for the honor.
