This play was a quick read due to the fast pace and beautiful writing, as well as the fact that it's only 85 pages. The juxtaposition between Dionysos and Pentheus provides an interesting perspective on the dangers of suppressing desire and expression, while also touching on the dangers of excess. The work itself plays with gender, but this translation makes that playfulness into a targeted critique on suppression. If you're interested in reading, I would definitely recommend the Carson translation!
