This is my 22nd Le Carré novel and by some margin the least satisfying. There are occasional glimmers of gold (he is a fantastic writer), but even his crisp punchy trademark dialogue lets him down here. The story doesn’t feel authentic, the relationships between Julian and Edward, and between Julian and Lily don’t convince either. The whole thing gets wrapped up too quickly, and there are too many strands that are underdeveloped.
Not terrible, but definitely disappointing compared to what came before.
