Coven of Ill Repute by S.L. Prater
4.0
I love S.L. Prater and will read anything she writes but this really caught my attention. The spooky elements of the story intrigued me; I love the combination of fantasy and horror elements plus romance. Basically a recipe of my favorite genres slapped with a pretty cover and I'm in.
Quiet and Rorick are compelling characters even when you want to shake some sense into them. We learn a bit about them and their histories but I was still left with some questions which leaves room for growth in future novels. I would say this book has a 'happy for now' ending so you won't be devastated with an epic cliffhanger but there's a good hook into the next book while the main story wraps up.
One of my favorite aspects of the story was the magic system. I thought it was all really interesting and unique. I liked learning about the different members of Quiet's coven and how their magic worked. I will even say that I thought her little bug helpers were cute and this is from someone who Does Not like bugs. I honestly kept picturing Gilbert as a little bat which I love. So if you're not a fan of little creepy crawlers, I will say that while they are a significant part of the story (and Quiet's magic), the Bug aspects are not super apparent. No offense to the little buggers but I just thought of them as little critters. It's the best course of action for all of us. I also really enjoyed the horror aspects as well. The creepy house, scary creatures, and spooky atmosphere was immaculate.
Anyways, I'm looking forward to the next book (and more :0?) and learning more about the coven and world in general!
