A Sorceress Comes to Call by T. Kingfisher
5.0
Look, I'm not gonna lie. T. Kingfisher has me in a figurative chokehold, and I’m very comfortable with it. Whatever she writes, I will read, enjoy, and become absolutely obnoxious about.
I should also clarify that I’m not familiar with the original fairy tale this was inspired by, so all my opinions are based exclusively on the book.
Having said that, I'm gonna proceed with my honest opinion:
AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHH! (fangirl screams)
I’ll never stop being in awe of this author’s range, how effortlessly she moves between genres and audiences, and how she’s created her own brand of atmospheric, slow-burn horror sprinkled with absurd situations and incredibly fleshed-out characters.
As with many of her stories, you won’t find overtly spooky, heart-attack-inducing moments here. This is mist-like creepy, fog-like dreary. It’s there, it’s everywhere, but you can’t pinpoint exactly where it starts or ends. It’s not overwhelming, but it’s present enough to influence the entire story.
If you’re a character-driven reader, this author and book are for you.
If you like complex family dynamics, this book is for you.
If you enjoy stories about regular people being dragged by life into situations where they must learn, grow, and step up to save themselves and their loved ones, this book is for you.
