Chronicle of the Narváez Expedition by Álvar Núñez Cabeza de Vaca

4.0

Whether you are reading this for school or just out of curiosity, I strongly recommend you read the Requerimiento document first (It's only about a page long)! It will greatly enhance your understanding and overall reading experience of this book.

This was a surprisingly fast paced "true" account of the Spanish Conquistadors trip to the Gulf of Mexico in search of new land to claim in Spain's name.

I don't want to spoil it, but the main character goes through such a drastic physical as well as mental metamorphosis that it was almost startling to see what he becomes in the end. This book is a definite gem for the literary world because it opens up numerous doors for debate regarding religion, morals and ethics, and the "true" story of how the New World became colonized.
