Cane by Jean Toomer
4.0
A rough and beautiful and rich book, an experiment in genre. The first two parts present brief episodes of life in the rural south and the urban north. The third segment is essentially theater. Especially when Toomer writes about the South, he's soaking in poetry and music, the call-and-response of church and the midnight panic of white supremacist attacks.
