Local Woman Missing by Mary Kubica

2.25

I wanted to DNF this when it used the R word twice in the first chapter, but I was borrowing it from a friend.  I decided to push through and make note of this in my review. While the rest of the plot was semi-enjoyable, I stand by the fact that the use of the word was unnecessary and shouldn’t have been in the book. There were plenty of other ways to make sure we knew the kidnapped child was being abused that didn’t include using ableist language.

Overall, I didn’t hate this but it was a reminder of why I don’t read a lot of thrillers. I’m not a fan of constant flash backs, which most thrillers depend on. I HATED Leo’s POV — he’s a messed up kid with a whole lot of trauma who needed therapy and parental attention. His dad also needed therapy. There was a lot of talk about abuse and sexual harassment/assault that I personally thought wasn’t necessary. Everyone sucked, really. Finally, a warning *ABOUT THE ACTUAL CULPRIT FYI*:
Spoilerout of all of the shitty people in this book the author could have pinned it on…. She picks one of the two lesbians? 🥴
