“We’re pra—” She pauses. I know what she’s going to say. That they are praying for me. That God is going to convict my heart and bring me back. But she stops herself. And instead, she says, “I love you.”

God, where do I even start. Val's story seemed to mirror my own childhood in so many ways. Always striving to be good, pure, virtuous, righteous. Forced to hear that we should prefer to submit over death. That God's plan is to constitute a family, to have children and live for the church. To go against the grain and realize how different you are, it's hard, it's nearly impossible. The countless nights spent crying wishing to God that you were anyone else, it takes its toll. But there's hope, there's a life I can build which can be my own, I have to believe that.
