Buried Prey by John Sandford

3.0

The first half is Davenport's earlier years, set well before the first book. This is also first one that's a cold case that revisited an early case that Davenport was involved in. He seemed almost like a different character and wasn't that similar to the earliest books. Contrary to what seems to be the consensus I didn't care care much for it. It did provide an interesting addition to his life arc though if nothing else. This certainly isn't one of the better ones in the series to me. I also strongly disagreed with one of the narrative choices that was made. Not because it happened, but how it happened. I don't think it served sufficient purpose and was a wasted opportunity. Hopefully it doesn't lead to a repeat of a previous story arc that I wasn't happy with. The criminal was mediocre at best.
