Atalanta by Jennifer Saint

5.0

This is Saint’s best book so far. I thoroughly enjoyed my time with Atalanta. We get so many Troy retellings, it was fun to spend time with Jason and the argonauts instead. Plus, I always like retellings where we actually get the gods, rather than simply the human version of the story.

That said, I found the early part of the book, where Atalanta is living with Artemis and the nymphs, a little slow going. I guess I just wanted to get to the action. It’s all important to her story though, obviously, so do push through it if you’re struggling.

Saint has a lot of fun pointing out all the shortcomings and frustrations she (we/many of us) have with the Argonautica (Hercules is a pointless sulking addition, all these heroes and, really, it’s Medea who really gets the Golden Fleece, etc) and manages to tell the story in a really fresh, fun and interesting way.

All in all, a great read.
