The Count of Monte Cristo by Alexandre Dumas

4.0

Well, this was a romp.

A soapy, excessive, long-winded, absolutely ridiculous romp, but a romp nonetheless! I've never seen a film adaptation of Count and outside of knowing that the central theme is REVENGE!!!, went into this one fairly blind. My hot take on a 178-year old classic widely regarded as one of the greatest books of all time? It's really, really good, y'all. Over 1,300 pages and not one felt tedious.**

(** That said, I wouldn't blame you for picking up the abridged version.)

Docking a half-star and rounding down, because those final pages were a bit abrupt/WTF and raised my modern eyebrow a bit - but that's a minor quibble. Will absolutely revisit this one in the future.
