I really wanted to like this book more. Especially after the particularly strong Part 1…
Then the later half of part 2 and part 3 happens and all the mickey mouse BS unfolds. I can tell that the author has actually read and thought about the themes of the original “Legend of Sleepy Hollow” story.. But later on in the book it becomes something that is frankly, very silly… The final fight beingan anime-style power of love sequence . AAAAAAA.
Also, the irony of portraying Brom and co in a rather progressive light (which in itself I am not against and actually enjoyed) but at the same time all the poor people in the book are just jealousy-ridden bullies; lol, lmao even.
For the first half in the book, I was eager to see more Crane (maybe not physically present in the story but on the page) considering how gender roles play into his story in the original text quite a bit. Then that little twist happens.. Oh well:
I want to reread the originally story now and compare the two more diligently, so I can’t say the book didn’t make me think a lil bit. Unfortunately, the late sections of the book bring down my rating quite a bit overall.
