If You Would Have Told Me by John Stamos

emotional hopeful informative reflective medium-paced

3.5

It’s hard to rate a memoir because I feel like I’m rating someone’s life story rather than a book….and then factor in that sometimes the book structure or format is part of that too.
All that said, I landed on a 3.5 for this book. Sometimes I was enthralled by the story and sometimes less interested. Some parts I skimmed (too many song lyrics for me) and some made me cry.

John Stamos grew up in a loving home with two wonderful parents. His mom sounded especially supportive. It’s nice to see a celebrity memoir where the celebrity’s backstory isn’t heart breaking.

John takes on a pretty non linear trip through his life. I would have followed it better if I could wrap my mind around when things were happening more easily. But the story is set up more by subjects than by being a flowing timeline.

John talks about his rise to fame, the path that led to Full House, his time on Full House (I’ll be honest, this was the part of the story I was most interested in and I could have read more about this time in his life), life after Full House, The Beach Boys (ok, I honestly thought he met them on Full House lol!), his first marriage and divorce, his parents, his sobriety, his friendship with Bob Saget, Dave Coulier and other celebrities, and his current wife and son.

Some parts I found more interesting than others but that’s true of life itself too. And he made me cry a couple of times which took me off guard.
