Whispers of a Broken Halo by Abbi Glines

5.0

Whispers of a Broken Halo blew me away.  Abbi Glines has written an emotional and heartbreaking story of sacrifice, bravery, and overcoming trauma.

Byrn is one of the strongest characters, that I've read.  Life has not been easy for her.  She had faced abuse and struggles with a stutter.  As a young teen, Rio was the one good thing in her life.  Life hasn't been easy for Rio either being raised by a neglectful mother. From the moment Rio moves into the trailer park, Byrn is special to Rio. He is a friend and protector to Bryn until he moves away.

Seven years later, life is still hard for Bryn.   She is struggling to provide for herself, her nephew, Cullen, and her sister, Tory.  Tory is trouble.  She can't keep a job for more than 2 days and a case of bad decisions, leaving Bryn to carry the all burdens.  Byrn will do anything to give her nephew a good life, despite his neglectful mother.  Cullen is a sweet and intelligent 4-year-old. I loved his honesty.  When Tory's bad decisions force them to move, again, Bryn choose The Shores, Alabama where Rio moved.  The Shores is a small town and Bryn hopes to run into Rio again.  She gets a job at the farmers market he and his grandparents operate but something has changed in Rio and he avoids her.

When Bryn catches Tory vandalizing a Jeep and hears approaching cops, to keep her sister out of trouble and in Cullen's life, she takes the blame. When Rio sees Bryn with the metal rod used to destroy his Jeep, he is angry and believes that all the good in her is gone.  His trust issues cause him to only see the negative.  He sees her as being like his mother and others from the trailer park they once lived.  He wants nothing to do with her, and fires her.  Because of him, the town wants nothing to do with her.  But Byrn doesn't stay down, she pulls out her strength and bravery and does what she needs to do to take care of her nephew. When her sister doesn't come home one morning, Rio helps locate her.  As he watches her with her nephew he begins to see how good Bryn is.  He sees the girl he once loved.  I have no words to describe Rio as a boyfriend….but perfection! He is protective, possessive, and has a dirty mouth.

Rio is a character that shows a lot of growth.  I love Rio, but boy did I get frustrated with the way he treated Bryn. For a while I was (secretly) rooting for Bryn to give Saints a chance…but I'm so glad she didn't.  Rio and Bryn are meant to be. (But, I need more of Saints).

Whispers of a Broken Halo is a top read of the year. Involved the storyline and characters.  It leaves me with the same feeling many of her Rosemary Beach and Sea Breeze books left me with years ago.  Yes!!!
