This would've been trippy to read when it was first published in 1989, but reading it now over thirty years later, with the benefit of looking back over the history of those years, it's terrifying. That's the true genius of this book. The power playing psychic vampires have shown you what they're capable of and you know now what they had been planning to do and it's hard to set the book down after that last page and not wonder "jeez, could they really be out there?"
There are quite a few characters and a plotlines running at first. At first they don't seem connected but they all come to a head by the final chapters, changing how you see everything that came before it. It's brilliantly done. Some of the characters are rather flat, but some, namely Melanie, Saul and Willi stand out. The battle between Saul and his Oberst is my favorite plotline and will stick with me after.
