Batman: Broken City by Brian Azzarello

4.0

It took me a few pages to realize that this was a noir narrative and it wasn't just lazy tough guy. I know it sounds weird that there's a big difference to me, but good noir writing is one of my favorites. Gritty "this city" and "nobody cares" have to be handled with caution, because it's so very easy to be stupid. Bad noir writing is one my least favorites, because it gives something so stunning and monolithic a cheap and hokey name. This graphic novel had some tremendous lines, and it didn't follow Batman through his cliches. It was its own story from start to finish, and it did it with a variety of characters that had a variety of motives. It was solid.
