When I Was Puerto Rican by Esmeralda Santiago

emotional informative reflective medium-paced

4.0

although this is an immigrant’s story, it’s not the just story of moving from Puerto Rico to New York, it’s the story of always moving, of always seeking, always wandering. of the gains but also the losses that come with every new location. of how what you’re seeking might not be found in a new home, a new city, a new country. of all the things we carry with us, forward, into the newness

“…that being in Brooklyn was not a new life but a continuation of the old one. that everything had changed, but nothing had changed, that whatever Mami had been looking for when she brought us to Brooklyn was not there, just as it wasn’t in Puerto Rico.”
