Hurricane Season by Fernanda Melchor

4.0

This book reminds me of a Flannery O'Connor story; it is extremely graphic, and I felt like I needed a shower after reading it. There are no paragraphs, and sentences can run on for pages, which added to the chaos and urgency of the story. The lives of the characters are almost unbelievably tragic, so I didn't enjoy reading it, but I gave it 4 stars because the writing transports the reader so effectively. Characters do terrible, violent things, but their humanity shows as well. I have been drawn to Latin American literature in the past few years and continue to be, even after finishing such a brutal story.
