Throughout the whole novella I was thinking “ok, solid 4 stars.” Gorgeous writing as always, a THIRTY year old MC (we LOVE to see it) who isn’t a perfect weapon or beauty or chosen one, with a really interesting plot and disease (I know that’s weird, but I found Carissa’s version of a plague really interesting!) I loved that the MC was so bookish with the constant search and craving for knowledge, and a little aloof really resonated with me.

But then. OH BUT THEN. In classic Carissa narrative, she gives me the ol’ one-two with the plot twist that makes me audibly “WHAT.” And that’s when it became 5 stars and I was ashamed for even deigning to think it was anything less than that. I could read a whole full length novel about these two, and I’m so glad they’ll be in future books.

And can I just say… it’s always great when we get to see past the peacocking of overtly prideful male MC’s… but the fact that Vale has this sweet shyness to him just absolutely melted my heart. Reminded me of how I felt learning of Max’s backstory in WoLH. Such beautifully complex characters.
