Ash by Malinda Lo
2.0
2.5 stars.
I wanted to love this, I really did, but I found it quite uninspired.
While the writing is quite lovely, nothing much happens in this Cinderella reimagining. Ash is a passive and uninteresting character. I didn’t connect with her, and things just happen to her rather than her making her own choices. Nor are there any real problems or conflict within the story, nothing that requires much effort to resolve, anyway.
And there’s no emotion or chemistry between Ash and the huntress. We never really see them falling in love or anything special between them, and so their relationship feels forced, insincere and unremarkable.
This book has an interesting premise, but unfortunately the execution is somewhat lacking.
