I'm recently back to the reading game (thanks booktok/bookstagram!), and of course heard the hype. Got a great deal on the whole ACOTAR series and was super excited to read them.... from dates read, I started in Jan 2024 and finished in OCTOBER. I could not get into this book, it felt off. I didn't care about most of the characters, I wasn't enthralled by the "mystery" that was being proposed. I can't describe it but I was not sucked in immediately like others have. The first 100-200 pages were difficult to keep pushing on, then I got put into a reading slump and I was just not having it. However, my annual Skyrim playthrough and completion-ist at heart needed to read this damn book series. Once I hit halfway+ I read it super quickly, but not in a voracious, I NEED to know what happens way, in a "I really just wanna see what all the hype is about" way. I'm going to guess that book 1 is not the selling point and it's either the whole universe or probably the last one? I've been pretty good at avoiding most spoilers. I am interested to see how the story progresses and hopefully fall in love with this universe like everyone else!
I do agree that this could've absolutely been a standalone book and we didn't need anything else after.
