The Secretary by Renée Knight

3.0

There are few occupations more valued by some of us than those held by people who are organized, efficient, discrete, and loyal. Christine butcher is certainly all of those. She gets a job as the personal assistant of a hyper-ambitious supermarket executive, and for 18 years, Christine watches, listens, notices, and uses the information she gathers when she needs to for her benefit.

You watch these two women deal with each other sometimes in full-on claws-out mode, sometimes in velveted claws mode, but always in a creepy power seesaw way. The plot is slow, but you won't want to skip around since many chapters end either with a new discovery or with a bit of a cliffhanger.
