Wojtek the Bear: Polish War Hero, by Aileen Orr

emotional funny hopeful informative inspiring reflective sad fast-paced

5.0

I became fascinated by the cigarette smoking, beer drinking and wrestling loving bear after seeing the public sculpture erected in the Princes Street Gardens to commemorate the Polish War Heroes of the Second World War in my home in Edinburgh.

I found this book incredibly moving and funny throughout. Wojtek's personality shone through the pages and you could feel the author's passion for the subject seep into you. I appreciated that while the book documented Wojtek, the human soldiers were not neglected as I firmly believe that in this regiment they came hand in hand.

There is a real focus on reflection and how we treat those who we once viewed as heroes over the passage of time. I find that still a very relevant topic to consider today so many years on.
