While I enjoyed elements of this book, it felt too ambling and sentimental in its satire. There were periods of critique that felt like they could be interesting, but it never took that final step into definitively saying something. Instead, it felt wishy-washy, like the author could not stand to condemn what it placed as its target. At times it also stepped fully away from satire and became a novel about the protagonist's relationship with his family, something that undercut the tone of the rest of the novel. I was also told I could step into this series in the middle and still understand and enjoy it, but that was not the case, there were many references to things it seemed like I was supposed to know but didn't.
