The Wedding People is an introspective look into the dreams we have set out for ourselves and realizing 40 years later that we are still depressed.
I loved how honest Alison Espach is with her characters. Phoebe is a character that you will soon not forget as she is so relatable and there are moments where you truly believe you are her. Regardless of age, readers will find glimpses of themselves, whether it is Phoebe of the present or the past. Her dreams and her present are so familiar and it really makes you fall right into the story.
This book is very gripping from the beginning as you have this outsider, Phoebe, who comes to this hotel where the rest of the rooms are booked by people attending the wedding of Lila and Gary. Each character introduced is quirky and multifaceted which is a phenomenal feat as often times books tend to make side characters simply just side characters. Having a grasp on the wedding parties personalities and importance within the novel made me want to continue reading. This is a very funny novel even in the more serious conversations which I think is exactly how life is. It is a messy novel that will show you that life doesn't always go as planned, you will find new dreams, and being alive may not always be rainbows and sunshine, but you never really know what is around the corner.
Overall, the way that Espach is able to tell this stunning story about grief, love, living, and finding yourself in the unlikeliest of places in a third-person omniscient POV is masterful, and I will be reading whatever else I can get my hands on by them.
