The Turnout by Megan Abbott

3.0

Gripping as it unfolds, but ultimately a bit overloaded. I greatly enjoyed exploring the complicated relationship between the Durant sisters as well as the competitive world of ballet within their studio; these descriptions and interactions are where Abbott's writing shines the most. The unfolding mystery and changing dynamics brought about by an outsider are incredibly interesting and create a propulsive plot. The final act piles on the twists, and while it was fun at first to be repeatedly surprised by new developments, after a while it felt like Abbott bit off more than she could chew with regard to the tale's themes and ideas. A more streamlined story would have been a real winner.
