Fat Chance, Charlie Vega by Crystal Maldonado
4.0
It can be hard to have a mom that looks like a model and a best friend who is society's definition of perfection. But Charlie is trying to stay positive and look on the bright side, maybe she will just get that chance to shine. Fat Chance, Charlie Vega comments on societal pressures on female bodies and the constant struggle to have self love. Charlie Vega is warm, smart, and witty. She is bold, realistic and sympathetic; allowing for every reader to be able to find themselves in her story. The plot allows Charlie to have identity and not sole focus on one theme but allow her to be complex. Maldonado creates realistic relationships and allows for both the positive and negative aspects of those relationships be displayed. The mother daughter relationship is dynamic and real, allowing for Charlie and her mom to full embody the spaces and situations they are in.
