King of Scars by Leigh Bardugo

4.0

The fantasy part of the book was incredibly boring. Three god-forsaken excuses for Saints living in the Fold? Dragons? Bees? I couldn’t care less. This whole ark felt like a cheap wish to get Darkling back into the story as if Ravka and the crown didn’t have enough enemies already.

Elizaveta as well was dull. I wouldn’t go so far as to call her a villainess of the story because the depth of her character and motivations (which are none) showed me nothing as if she wasn’t even in a storyline. At least I wish she wasn’t in a storyline. She felt like a tool, she was a tool, and yet she didn’t have anything interesting about her.

Zoya, who could have easily been one of my favorite ya female protagonists due to her no-fcks-given attitude, loyalty, practicality, and strong character, lost everything likeable about her during those saints chapters. I have almost mistaken her for Alina Starkov.

Nikolai. Well, He.

Nina having conversations with Mattias everywhere she goes. Nina standing in the middle of a graveyard and listening to the voices of the dead. Help us. Nina finally letting him go. She was exhausted and cold, and she’d dug her lover’s grave tonight. Nina finding joy in a girl who is very similar to her and yet chained to Fjerda’s societal stereotypes. Nina missing all the crows. Nina building a tree for saint Djel out of bones. Nina being the hottest woman alive for the third book in a row and I am here for it. Loved her chapters so much.
