Synopsis:
Pat and Pran were born to be rivals. Their dads run rival companies. Growing up, they constant competed. In college, they are even in rival departments. With all of this competing, they were never really enemies. They soon discover that they feel something more for each other. Could this something more end the rivalry between their departments? What about their families rivalry? Or will they have to give up on themselves for the sake of their families?
Review:
One of my favorite Thai Boys Love (BL) dramas is Bad Buddy. Behind the Scenes is the novel the show is based off. While Bad Buddy worked to subvert some classic BL tropes, the novel maintained some of them. In all honesty, the drama and the novel are so different. Having watched Bad Buddy first, I couldn’t predict what would happen in Pat & Pran’s story. For that reason, I loved it. I didn’t know what to expect, but I love Pat & Pran’s development. The story is told from both perspectives adding depth to the story. You see Pran’s struggle to say the three words Pat’s longs for him to say. There is such a. Strong tension between following your own heart and doing what your family wants. While you can look at this from a western/US lens, you could say that Pat & Pran should do what makes them happy. If you look at it with a slight understanding of Thai culture and family dynamics, you’ll understand that decision is much more complicated! I’m so happy to have read this and feel like a much needed rewatch of Bad Buddy is coming! I highly recommend the novel’s English translation and the show which you can watch on YouTube!
