Fourth Wing by Rebecca Yarros

5.0

Hours after finishing this book, tears came to my eyes because I was still thinking about the emotional final chapters. Despite the fact that I saw most of the final events coming, including the final reveal, I was gripped by every moment.

It isn't a flawless book. Some of the worldbuilding frustrated me - it makes no sense that a military desperate for people would design a training system specifically designed to kill off a large percentage of its most elite volunteers, or encourage them to be literally at each others' throats rather than bonding. It's entertaining but unrealistic. The main character also spends far too much time thinking about how good looking the love interest is (and this definitely isn't YA).

Despite those flaws, I was entertained from the very beginning, and quickly came to care about many of the characters, not just the main couple but also others such as the amazing Liam. It is a fantasy romance and the two main characters have chemistry from their first meeting.

As the main plot of the series built up, the rating in my head slowly moved up - I started it thinking it would be an enjoyable three stars, was at four stars by the midpoint, and by the end knew it would be a full five.

I loved it.
