The Cryptic Prophecy by Rebecca Hefner

5.0

I absolutely adore this fantasy series. Now in its sixth full book, we’ve gotten to see the characters grow and develop over time. Darkrip and Arderin (one of my favorite couple) have grown children, and Callie, their oldest daughter and subject of a prophecy that has always haunted her, is engaged to be married to Zadicus. Callie has always feared she wouldn’t find a guy who wouldn’t like her for her, and this leads her to be vulnerable to nearly being tricked by a man using her while allied with Bakari.

I loved Brecken, her bodyguard. He and Callie had wonderful, natural chemistry together, and I loved all the scenes with him and his family. There’s that old saying that a man who is good to his mom and sisters will treat his wife well, and Brecken is a kind brother and good son (plus, who wouldn’t have fallen for those love letters?) And he and Callie have STEAMY chemistry. Etheyra’s Earth is a series marked by rich, complex world building, and smart, complicated characters. The war between immortals and demons is reaching a peak, and Callie, with her ability to both heal and read minds, is pivotal. The ladies in the book have no qualms about letting their favorite gentlemen know their thoughts about the recent law change allowing female soldiers to fight (it’s about time!), and I especially loved the scene where Arderin rips in to Darkrip when he’s having an overprotective father-bear moment over his little girl “Callie? Weak and vulnerable? Try again, dear. Have you met our daughter?” Perfection! I loved the glimpses we got of some other side characters, so much so that by the time we reached the end of the book and a special teaser was included, telling us who book seven would be about, I squealed in delight! No spoilers, but it was exactly who I was hoping for!
