How to Make a Living with Your Writing: Books, Blogging and More by Joanna Penn

4.0

A quick read and a good primer on exactly what the title says, making a living with your writing. This book mostly focuses on making money with writing fiction and nonfiction books (which is probably what most people reading a self-help book like this are aspiring to do). A lot of this information was already known to be because I have been reading up on the business side of creative writing/publishing from the writers perspective, but this might be very new information for many young writers considering how to make it our there in the marketplace.

The first half of the book is an unbiased look (most books/blogs I've read on the topic are openly opinionated) at the pros and cons of traditional vs self-publishing, and what steps to take in the matter (especially in the much more wide open and hands on world of self-publishing) from someone who has actually "made it." Meaning, the author actually lives off her writing. It is an overview of many topics that are a lot larger, and she provides a lot of additional resources for more in depth looks certain topic she covers. This is a book for beginners, just to get oriented with the possibilities out their for making money this their writing.

The second, shorter part of the book is about the more secondary streams of income you can get related to your writing: website advertising, speaking fees, merchandise sales. freelance work and etc.

Again, a good beginner resource with plenty of actually good additional resources (I say because some I've already read and will vouch for)) for further education.
