This one just didn't work as well, in terms of both character development and plot. The narrative was broken by the repeated switch over to Shane's first person viewpoint, which did not seem as true a voice as Claire's. I don't remember any mention of Eve fencing before, so that increased the feeling some elements were just thrown in to make the plot work. Amelie, despite voiced annoyance, continued to allow Claire to do fairly much whatever she wanted. Michael seemed very easy about everything Shane did and said, not getting riled or overly worried at all (despite going out to talk to him later). Myrnin seemed to be the only character remaining true to himself.
