Little Women by Louisa May Alcott

5.0

This book is the book that got me back into reading when I was 11 years old and had not finished a book since I was probably 8 or 9 years old. The modern books that were being written for my age range didn't appeal to me as they were all about fairies and unicorns and I guess I wanted to be a bit more grown up. I should add that I read the original Little Women not the version that includes Good Wives and I have since tried to read it and found that I could no longer persist with Alcott's writing style. But I remember loving Little Women when I was reading it.

Unlike most, I wasn't overly fond of Jo. I think she was just so different to me that I found it hard to relate. I oddly loved Amy, more because I found her entertaining rather than because I actually liked her character. Beth was a bit sickly sweet but I grew to love her (probably because of how fondly I remember the book). Meg is everything I want to be in an older sister. I read this book around the time my brother was born and I remember thinking that there was nothing I wanted more than for him to love me the way that Jo, Beth and Amy loved Meg.

If it hadn't been for Little Women I don't know that I would ever have replenished my love for reading. And I can honestly say that if I didn't have my books, I think I'd be a different person.
