The Island of Dr. Moreau by H.G. Wells

3.5

The prose itself was a little uninspired and overly fanciful, but i think in a way that suits the subtle underlying superiority the mc holds. The mc serves as a vessel for the reader to observe the horrors of dr moreau/his experiments and be a reflection of english societal mores, so he doesn't have much personality

Overall i found it a bit hard to slog through until the very end when things got more interesting with questions of "what happens now that you know this is possible" but in the end it didn't really offer any answers. I think the horrors of ethical malpractice was really well described/conveyed, and actually made me a bit nauseous as i was eating, so i think the highlight of this book was how it warned against purposeless and cruel experimentation.

I think it wouldve been cool if wells explored these themes if moreau wasn't exiled from england and was instead embraced by the english scientific community, to better emphasize how one's society influences what questions you ask or experiments you conduct
