It was an interesting book and I certainly see the appeal, especially for the time it was written. It took me a while to finish it, as a non-native English speaker and because of some subject matter in the beginning, but overall I can understand why this is considered a classic. Before I read it, I saw someone decribe it as "the greatest love story", but I definitely didn't see it that way. In my opinion it is definitely not a romantic story, more of a coming-of-age story with some romance, suspense and supernatural aspects, where the majority of the characters are very flawed. I know that some may consider , but in my opinion, becomes a more infuriating character in the end.
