Facing the Music by Larry Brown
5.0
Alcoholic wives. Hopeless husbands. Murderous men. These are cutting and gritty stories of the American South. Larry Brown makes us stare in the face of the bleakness and horrors of these character's lives but he does so with extreme empathy and care -- there is still hope for these people, but not in the way you would expect.
It's rare for me nowadays to be blown away by a short story collection and feel compelled to finish it in one day but every sentence, every page, every story made me want to keep reading until the end. I will definitely be reading more of Brown's work after this.
