My Dark Vanessa by Kate Elizabeth Russell

5.0

This book is not everyone’s cup of tea. I had the opportunity to read this in a pivotal time in my life, I felt understood in many ways, I felt seen while reading Vanessa’s monologue, specifically going back to her teenage years. There were some lines where I felt it conveyed and encapsulated perfectly how echoing the abuse/power dynamic is, I went through multiple emotions reading it, even helping me understand from an outsider perspective. It was heartbreaking at the same time, picturing how the abuse rewired and engraved her brain in ways one couldn’t fathom right away,
that’s why the ending felt almost therapeutic to read, not an expected happy one, but a present one, less blurry, kinder.
I hope whoever gets to read this, there are sensitive underlying themes, it grips you.
