Clockwork Angel by Cassandra Clare

4.0

So, my Shadowhunter journey continues with my first novel of the series and I have to say I was quite impressed with it. I’ve seen a lot of people saying that this series is better than The Mortal Instruments but that that comes down to Clare being a better writer and knowing more about her world so we will see how that one goes down for me once I get there.

But for this story, I think this was a really solid introduction to the Shadowhunter world, especially that you get way more depth than with the three short stories I read before this one and it’s intern that you’re learning about the Shadowhunter world from the eyes of someone who should by all rights be considered a Downworlder. So there’s an odd feeling that you’re not always getting the right information or that things are being kept from you.

And I wonder about Tessa’s abilities. Like at the beginning of the book when she’s with the Dark Sisters she says that they gave her things to drink and then made her try and “change” so was she born with these abilities or did she acquire them? I guess we’ll find out at some point but that would be interesting to follow through.

And while I can see the love triangle coming from a mile away, I’m kinda rooting for Jem?! He seems much nicer than Will who quite frankly needs a good slap from a parental figure if you ask me. And I like that Clare is showing a little bit of the goings on in the wider Shadowhunter world, even if it was to tell the story of how Jem lost his parents (which was very sad and I may or may not have welled up a bit imagining it).

I still stand by the fact that I don’t like Jessamine. So she’s on thin ice.
